Series I. National NOW
|
Scope and Content Notes: In response to the failure of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to implement Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which would prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, NOW was established on June 30, 1966 in Washington, D.C., by women attending the Third National Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women. Since its formation, NOW has strived to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society; to secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for all women; to end all forms of violence against women; to eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and to promote equality and justice in our society. Evansgardner served as the Eastern Regional Director of NOW and organized the Eastern Regional Conference in Pittsburgh in 1973.
