Subseries 8. Frick Building Sale, 1967-1982

Scope and Content Notes: These records document the sale of the Frick Building in the early 1980s. In 1980, the building costs and repairs began to mount and there was an option to sell the property. Frick’s daughter, Helen, was against the sale of the building her father loved so much. In a letter to Mr. Carrell, the President of Mellon National Bank, Helen writes “My father communicated to me his intention that it [the building] be held and it is my desire to carry out his intentions.” Records include leases, reports, agreements, memoranda, and tax assessments. However, the majority of the materials consist of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and property appraisal. Clippings are from local newspapers that covered the sale of the building. Correspondence in this section mostly contains letters to and from Miss Helen Clay Frick, Mellon Bank Trustees, attorneys, and other persons involved in the building sale. The property appraisal materials documents building improvements, bidders, and agreement of sale. The Frick Building was eventually sold in 1981 to the United States Steel Corporation. The records in this subseries date from 1967 to 1982, but the majority are from 1981 and 1982.
