Subseries 1. Frick Building General Material, 1901-1928

Scope and Content Notes: The records in this subseries pertain to the Frick Building and Annex and include agreements, surveys, indexes, reports, and court cases. There are also newspaper clippings, directories, memorandum, and correspondence although some correspondence in this subseries reference the Carnegie Building as well. A tenant from the Frick Building wrote a letter on June 16, 1902, “We beg leave to call your attention to the smoke from the Carnegie Building which comes into our offices when the wind is blowing this way; sometimes it is almost unbearable.” Indeed the smoke was awful to the tenants, but also to the workmen finishing the building. An outgoing letter dated June 26, 1902 (in copybooks) from D.H. Burnham & Company to William A. Carr states, “It will be impossible for us to proceed with the decoration of the Club Story until the smoke from the Carnegie Building has been stopped. The soot and dirt from this stack will mix with the moist colors and will give us a clouded effect….” The nuisance stopped when the smoke stack was extended. Material pertaining to the extension of the smoke stack includes correspondence, an agreement, and a blueprint.
The majority of the reports are comprised of elevator examination and inspection matters. Elevators were generally inspected by the Employers’ Liability Assurance Corporation, Limited and date from to 1913 to 1928. Other records in this subseries relate to connecting of the Frick Building to the Annex. These materials include an ordinance for bridges connecting the Frick Building to the Frick Building Annex. Additional correspondence, ordinances, and bridge construction agreements between Frick and Lucy Carnegie (Thomas Carnegie’s wife) relating to a connection from the Carnegie Building to the Frick Building Annex. The materials in this subseries date from 1901 to 1928.
