Brief Biographical / Historical Sketch


Stephen Reichstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. He received his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and then attended the University of Pennsylvania for his Masters of City Planning degree in 1961. From April 1971-October 1978, Reichstein worked as the Deputy Director of the Pittsburgh Planning Department. From 1975-October 1978, he served as the first Director of the City of Pittsburgh’s Community Development Grant Program (CDBG). Reichstein also served as the Director of the Model Cities Program and the Chairman of the Mayor’s Minority Business Enterprise Committee. In 2000, Reichstein self-published Discovering Queens! A Useful Guide to Queens, New York which was featured in Newsday and The New York Times.
