The purpose of the collection, as outlined in the funding proposal, was the "...creating [of] a new research source a living record of the Pittsburgh Renaissance obtained from the oral reminiscences of Pittsburghers' own lives and activities which would supplement documentary files and provide for the qualitative enrichment of the written record."
