The Farmer's Deposit National Bank of Pittsburgh began business as the Pittsburgh Savings Fund Company.

Flood waters reached a level of 38.2 feet at the Point.

Orphan Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny, the present Protestant Home for Children and the oldest institution of its kind in Pennsylvania, was founded. It was incorporated in 1834.

St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church was dedicated. It was consecrated the sect's first cathedral in the city on August 7,1843.
