To help celebrate Pitt’s 225th “birthday” on February 28, we have borrowed from the Pennsylvania State Archives
the original charters that formally established the Pittsburgh Academy (1787) and then the Western University of Pennsylvania (1819), forerunners to the University of Pittsburgh (1908). The first pages from both of the original charters will be on display in the Audubon case in Hillman Library
from February 27-May 18. Reproductions of all the pages of the charters will also be on display near the exhibit case. Both charters have been digitized and are available for viewing from our Documenting Pitt
homepage. We are grateful to the Pennsylvania State Archives for allowing us to borrow both charters and put them on display during this important celebration of Pitt’s history.
