The Archives Service Center opened for research use the John W. Oliver Papers. Dr. Oliver, professor and head of the department of history at the University of Pittsburgh (1923-1954), taught courses in American history and technology. He served as chairman of the National Archives Commission to lead a campaign to establish a new National Archives building in Washington, D.C. He also served as chair of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Survey (1929-1936) which produced a five volume survey on Western Pennsylvania’s economic and social history. Professor Oliver’s papers include personal and professional correspondence, lectures to numerous organizations and schools, various newspaper clippings detailing his achievements, and working manuscripts, among other documents related to his life.
