ASC Updates Pittsburgh City Photographer Online Collection
The Archives Service Center added over one thousand images to our online collection of Pittsburgh City Photographer images. Most of these were scanned from the original glass plate negatives; others from the deteriorating acetate negatives. These latter images present a significant preservation challenge due to a process known as Cellulose-Acetate Film Deterioration or “Vinegar Syndrome” that affects the CP negatives created between 1931-1939. We selected 333 negatives which were conserved by the Chicago Albumen Works with support from the University Library System.
